*******************First Textual Analysis Post

Hello Class,

Below you will again find your prompt, on which you should comment. I cannot wait to hear your opinions on the first five chapters.
It is okay to type your "quoted" sentence at the beginning of your post. I want also see what page your quote is from. You can format it by putting the page number in the parenthesis after the quote like this (40).
Once you post, we will gather in the classroom and present them to one another.

FIRST RESPONSE to A Long Way Gone:
Pick one line (sentence) from Chapters 3 or 4 of A Long Way Gone that really stands out to you and makes you think about ONE of the following topics: hunger, escape, or family.
In a blog response, do the following:
1) Enter in the title of the post, Hunger, Escape, or Family – depending on which topic you have chosen.
2) Within the actual post, respond to the topic by re-stating your quoted line, and giving a detailed explanation of how you understand this line represents the general topic.
In this response, you must also spend only one brief paragraph summarizing the story to provide context for the quoted line (4 sentences), and the interpret the line in terms of what it says about hunger (or escape, or family)? (This should be another couple of paragraphs, at least 7-10 sentences. This is the bulk of your blog post. Make connections to yourself, and share your opinions. Always ask why you feel the way you do about the lines.) What do you learn from and/or feel about the line in our book?  How does this connect to yourself, what we've seen in the gallery, or what you've talked about in your essays?

  1. Escape

“ My heart throbbed with pain as I watched my brother lying on the ground, pretending to be one of the dead bodies” (28). In chapter 4 Ismael Beah and 5 of his buddies were escaping from the village. They went to the village after the attack to recover some money he had put under his bed. While they were leaving some rebels heard a sound. It was dead bodies already everywhere, so it was easier for them to be pretend dead bodies. The rebels had previously captured and executed people from their village.

I feel that someone that has to go through this at such a young age is ridiculous to me. The fact of his brother hiding hurts his heart, evening pretending to be dead. Knowing for them that it become that much even closer to death. They are so attached to each other, because they’re all they got. Their parents was gone, they’re far away from their grandmas house, and no money in their pocket. The fact that’s its completely dead bodies everywhere, the smell, the scenery, and rebels after them. It’s like there nowhere near the war but they feel as if they were there when they attacked the village. It’s quite crazy that everything is happening to them, reflects some part of Chicago’s violence. We are now the murder capitol of the nation. There is attack on the village and the fact that kids having guns at a early age is mind-blowing. The children their age even had guns, being recruited off the street, and if they refused they died. I tend to find inspirations through my poem’s seeking out hardships. I have no clue why negativity can better influence my poetry. I am a very positive person. For the most the inner thoughts strike a belief of me. That their and life can strike some similarities in me. The fact that Ismael experienced death and can keep walking is incredible. He had known that he had to stay alive for his brother and friends. If not who would have took them back to the village and who would stop them from making drastic mistakes. His parents are missing by a wrongful turn of events in his live.

  2. Family

'' That night for the first time in my life I realized that it is the physical presence of people and their spirits that gives a town life.'' (22). In chapter 3 Ismael is talking about the town before it was attacked by the rebels. In this quote he expresses what makes a town, I love how he said he first realized it. How the people feel in the town, you probably have the same thoughts too. You don't how the next day going to look or feel like.

I feel like a child being that young, he believe in his town is special. Shows that he is proud of where he come here. Him not having his family is very hard. His town is the only that comforts him, in this time of his life. The presence of people is like being though your family in a warm home. The village is working with each other more than ever. I think how this connect with family because, family don't have to be a mom and dad it can be your whole village. His friends is his family, shows that he have a lot trust in them. That's a lot for kid sleeping and facing throughout days during a civil war. I feel like we've seen in the gallery, LaToya Ruby Frazier's photography have a similar connection with Ismael story. In her photography showed family and struggle in her life. Just like how Ismael story is so detailed with memories of his struggles. LaToya shown details with her photography. In the end, they expressed that of what they are good at during, and having the strength to show theses events in their pasts. All ages and whatever race you are, you still have a connect to both of their stories.
